Wary

I would have looked into his eyes -

He, the worldly vagrant…

I would have looked at the God in him,

Just as I look at the face of a newborn,

Or at the cluster of stars,

Or at the fire of bright flowers,

Yes, I would have looked with infinite tenderness into his eyes,

Had I not been made wary of his worldliness,

Wary, not only of his worldliness, but of all the worldliness everywhere,

Even that which now flows in my veins,

And mocks at every thing beautiful…
